The Forgotten History of Wincanton's Market Place
Wincanton in the 21st Century may well be similar to other comparable towns, but this pleasant town on the Cale has many secrets.
There's a tiny piece of Wincanton's history that I imagine we've all walked past a hundred times without noticing or knowing anything about.
The picture above shows one of our town's iconic scenes. We are blessed to have a very attractive Market Place. There is no doubt that our Post Office is a star in this picture, being well maintained by the McCormack family.
The scene is pleasant, but we need to look more closely to discover our secret. Only a few paces away more history can be revealed.
Mill Street must be one of the oldest streets in Wincanton, and reminds of Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, minus the cobbles.
But even this closer look isn't quite enough. The next picture shows an important part of the history of Wincanton. In fact, maybe an important part of the history of Wincanton's economic past.
I'm not referring to the small hook on the wall next to the sign, though if it is of any historical significance please let us know in the comments below.
Moving in even closer, take a look between the down-pipe and the one-way sign post. You'll see a vertical black thing.
What is it?
It's a bit of rough, black painted metal. Research has revealed that this insignificant piece of metal is actually what is left of one of the Market Place gates.
So, sometime in Wincanton's history there was a market, probably including the sale of livestock. The assumption is that when the live-stock was in the Market Place, the gates were shut to prevent escape, and then all the bidding and sales would be conducted.
From historical records we know that Wincanton was given a market by Royal Charter (Queen Anne), and to this day a market can be held every Wednesday.
As you may be aware, the Town Team has been working tirelessly with the aim of re-establishing a market in Wincanton. Their work has borne some fruit in the form of finance to help with this project. They are currently gathering information so they can optimise the chance the market will succeed.
The idea of a regular market in Wincanton sounds great, and if it works well it would attract a lot of visitors. However, it's important that the Market gets the support of all Wincanton residents. Part of that support involves hearing from our residents. Please let us have your thoughts and ideas. What sort of market do you think would be a big success here?
