On the balmy evening of Thursday 8th July students, staff and parents alike were treated to a riveting programme of music at King Arthur's Community School, Wincanton.

In a busy week that saw King Arthur's students travel to Birmingham to perform at the world premiere of a piece for the charity Music for Youth called "Score!"; entertain Wincanton Primary and Our Lady's School; Thursday evening gave members of the school and local community an opportunity to recognise and applaud the musical ability and dedication of both students and staff.

King Arthur's School Orchestra

The school Orchestra opened proceedings with a highly proficient rendition of Johan Strauss' "Emperor Waltz" which set the standard for the whole evening. What followed was a captivating celebration of the talent and enthusiasm of King Arthur's students from all years. The variety of genres on show meant that there was something for everyone: Karl Jenkins' popular classical piece "Palladio" was performed by the newly assembled String Quartet, whilst a medley of hits by The Beach Boys was sung by the Year 7 & 8 Singing Group.

Solo singerThroughout the course of the evening Musical Director Miss Fletcher explained how many of the performers had been motivated to develop their works themselves, and that the packed programme reflected the talent and enthusiasm of the students. A great many soloists stepped into the spotlight, with notable performances from Katie Phillips, Ellie Hunt, Ellie Farrell, Elise Humphries, Bridie Pirie and Henry Wacey, whilst original compositions by Jenna Brocklehurst and Ella Brunton not only demonstrated great musical capability but consideration and creativity also.

The enterprising Folk Group, whose recent performance venues include Bournemouth Folk Club and the imposing Ven House, owned by designer Jasper Conran, demonstrated why it was in such public demand before the evening was brought to a close with a rendition of Lennon & McCartney's famous song "Here Comes the Sun", enjoyed by performers and audience members alike.

King Arthur's musiciansHeadteacher Ms Bradbury said she was "delighted with the performances of all who took part" and teacher Mr Lemon thanked the staff and Friends of King Arthur's who helped with the event. Special thanks were made to Miss Fletcher for the relentless energy, enthusiasm and hard work that she continues to invest in the Music Department.

Whilst only a few more appointments remain for the students before the summer holidays, musical opportunities arising at King Arthur's next year are well in advance, and already include a tour to Germany in October, where a joint concert is being organised between pupils from King Arthur's and those from the school of Wincanton's twin town, Lahnau.
