Coffee Morning Raises £520 for Parkinson's Research
The year 2012 has been designated "Find a Cure for Parkinson's Year", by Parkinson's UK. Parkinson's disease is an incurable progressive neurological disease. There are over a million suffers worldwide and it is estimated that there are over 120,000 suffers in the United Kingdom. There are at present over 90 neurological studies; research has already helped develop new and better treatments for Parkinson's, uncovered vital clues about how the condition develops and pioneered innovative research towards a cure.
To this end, Richard and Sue Young held a coffee morning at their home in Charlton Horethorne on 7th February, to raise money to fund research. They were totally amazed at the generosity of people who attended and thanks to those and other friends who had sent donations, a total of £520 was raised.
Sue said "I wanted to raise money for research, in a hope that a cure will be found so that further generations are not blighted with this horrible disease." She continued that her husband Richard was diagnosed 2 1/2years ago and has friends who also have the disease.
Richard stated, "It is imperative that we find a cure". They have been impressed and grateful for the excellent care given by the doctors and specialist Parkinson's nurse at Yeovil Hospital.
As Chairman of Wincanton & Area Parkinson's Group, I'm grateful to people like Richard and Sue who take the time to hold such fund raising events, which help to fund research projects to try and find a cure for Parkinson's Disease. It is estimated that one person is diagnose with Parkinson's every four minutes.
This year's "Parkinson's Awareness Week" is being held from the 16th to 21st April 2012. Events are being held locally to raise funds to find a cure for this disease.
Wincanton & Area Parkinson's Group meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, between 2.30 pm and 4.30 pm at Yarlington Sheltered Housing Scheme, Common Road, Wincanton BA9 9RD.
At March's meeting we shall be holding a concert by the Pupils of King Arthur's School.
