Planning for Real - Building on success in Queen Camel

Children have been forming the building blocks for development in Queen Camel as a model of the area takes shape this week. Pupils from Countess Gytha Primary School are working with local volunteers as part of the Youth Parliament project to consult on how the area could be developed in the future. A scale model of the village has been built which will be used to help local people demonstrate changes and improvements they would like to see in the area.

Queen Camel Parish Council has worked tirelessly to deliver actions set out in its Community Plan published in 2005 and was recently selected as a Frontrunner area to pilot the Government proposals for changes to planning legislation through the Localism Act.

Cllr Mike Lewis said, “A guiding principle of Neighbourhood planning is that emerging growth plans are based on broad participation and local agreement. This is a real opportunity for local people to influence development in the area.”

Local volunteer and Parish Councillor Rosemary Heath-Coleman added “There isn’t a limit on what can be discussed and put forward for consideration and although the focus is clearly on the build environment, this is an opportunity to suggest improvements to all areas of life in the village.”

The end result will be the first Neighbourhood Development Plan produced in South Somerset and will become a formal planning document in line with the Localism Act 2011.

The consultation period begins on Saturday 10th March with a drop in event between 12pm and 4pm at the Memorial Hall. Three further drop in sessions are planned throughout March with some further targeted events happening in April.
