Behind the Window of Elsie Florence Vintage China

Peer through the windows of Six South Street and you may wonder what is going on in there.

For over 30 years Number Six was well known as Paupers Restaurant, at the time THE place to eat in town.

And that's where that story ends and this one begins.

Sara KirkbyFive years ago along with my husband and our two children I left my London life as a freelance design consultant and stylist and made up my mind to escape to the country. We had decided that we were not going to keep the house we had bought in the centre of Wincanton as a restaurant (which it had been for over 30 years), but would instead put all our energy into slowly breathing new life into the 16th century upsy, downsy, topsy, turvy townhouse and create a base where I could run my business and where we could be in the hub after London.

Inspired by my grandmother Elsie Florence, I found a niche in the market to start a business hiring my inherited collection of beautiful vintage china and tableware for weddings and parties. The old shop front quickly became the ideal show room for my pieces of crockery for clients to view.

The business has grown as the house has developed and now the old shop windows change on a monthly basis showcasing my vintage china and creative eye for styling. The business is ever growing and has evolved into party designing where I am asked to decorate and style venues for my clients.

After a long busy summer I am able to take time to specialise in my hand crafted furniture. The old townhouse in Wincanton is a treasure trove in which clever finds and unusual creations are presented in ways which never fail to please. I am always busy working on a commission to recreate and re-present the old in new ways that often astonish me, whether it is a decoupage standard lamp trimmed in French flea market ribbon or a child's chair covered in Dandy comic.

The windows will always keep changing and the business evolving.
