Green Rubbish Collection Options for Springtime Gardeners
Green-fingered residents thinking of pruning their gardens this year are being reminded that they can have their garden waste collected directly from their kerbside.
Over seven thousand residents have signed up with South Somerset District Council to have either a green wheelie bin or green waste sacks picked up every fortnight, saving the need to drive to the recycling centre.
The district council is now accepting additional customers ready for collections beginning this April.
Cllr Tom Parsley, Portfolio Holder for Environment at South Somerset District Council explained both options. He said, "Bin collections provide the best value, but you can buy waste sacks as they offer a flexible option for those who don't regularly produce larger amounts of garden waste.
"Most people seem to prefer the green wheelie bin option which runs from April to March. If you regularly produce garden waste then the bin is extremely useful as it saves you the task of getting it in your car and to the recycling centre. All the waste is then composted which benefits the environment. Spread over the year, the service works out at under £2 per collection."
Alternatively, bags are £25 for ten and customers can leave as many out for collection as needed depending on how much waste they have produced that fortnight.
Somerset Waste Partnership announced the wider service covering all households in South Somerset in August 2009. Twelve hundred people signed up within the first week.
To register, contact South Somerset District Council on 01935 462462.
