Hearts and mind are stirred up in the debate and elections for Town Councillors
The elections on 11th March are now complete; and five out of six candidate were successfully elected to the Town Council. What excited me was the positive interest shown by the good sized crowd which turned up to the hustings on 4th March. My role was to chair the event in an impartial manner, and stop World War III breaking out! Each candidate was allowed to introduce themselves and speak about what issues they would focus on if they became a councillor. Their three-minute slot, each, certainly helped to focus the mind. Questions from the floor were then taken, and candidates were allowed to give a brief answer. Moving quickly through each of the six candidates meant there was no danger of anyone falling asleep.
Issues such as new housing developments, traffic congestion, the location of the doctor's surgery, the lack of influence upon the District Council, the lack of finance available to the town council, and the idea of re-starting the town Carnival, were some of the current issues raised briefly but without a hint of apathy. The evening may not have resolved many issues, but it did show us our potential councillors and – in a crowded room – we enjoyed the warm feeling of a common interest in seeing the good running of Wincanton town. In my case all that was missing was to end the evening with a sociable discussion over a decent drink in a friendly bar... but you can't have everything!
