Special celebration mugs will be handed out free to school children from Wincanton this summer to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. A Town Council jubilee committee was set up earlier this year to come up with ideas on how to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's 60 years on the throne.

The council has splashed out £624 on 360 mugs to mark the special occasion, purchased from online traders Gift Selection.

Although no specific jubilee party is planned, the town will mark the date with a civic ceremony and mug presentation to children aged under 11 from the parish, hosted by mayor Colin Winder.

Committee chairman Deryck Lemon said the year should not pass by without giving the monarchy the recognition it deserves. "Hopefully handing out these mugs at a civic ceremony will help raise the profile of the constitutional monarchy among young people," he said.

"As much as it is a celebration of the Queen, the monarchy in general is an important part of our society and it is a good opportunity for young people to learn about citizenship. We hope to involve as many people from the parish as possible in this and we want to get lots of children from Wincanton along to a civic ceremony at the town hall to take part.

"It is an important year and it should be remembered in the right way. Parents can sign up to take part at the Town Hall. We are also hoping to get a plaque put up outside the town hall to mark the occasion."

The mugs will be handed out to children at a ceremony in June. A date is yet to be arranged. To register for one of the Wincanton free mugs call the Town Clerk on 01963 31693.

The committee also hopes to plant new trees near Shadwell Lane and rename part of the area Jubilee Walk. A town hall plaque has also been mooted.

Scouts will be celebrating the Diamond Jubilee by descending on Wincanton during the Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend for their annual jamboree.

Children in Bratton Seymour, Pitcombe and Shepton Montague will also be receiving mugs to mark the year. More than a hundred youngsters aged under 16 living in the parishes will receive one of the bone china mugs.

A fundraising committee helped collect more than £2,000 from garden parties, a bridge day and sponsorship from businesses to fund the scheme.

A day of celebration on Monday, 4th June, at Hadspen House will start with a children's party followed by a tug-of-war and live music from the Hambledon Hopstep Ceilidh band at 7.30pm. The day will be rounded off in style with hot food at the Montague Inn and a firework display at 11pm.
