By Julie Jenkins

A painting by local artist Julie Jenkins'Sandstone', is an exhibition of paintings, some of which were created from sketches and photographs of my recent travels along the Silk Route. I am showing my work in an 'Open House' during Somerset Art Weeks 2010, from Saturday 18th September 2010 until Sunday 3rd October 2010.

My home, 2 The Old Police Station, North Street, Wincanton, BA9 9AZ, will be open to the public from 11.00 a.m. until 6.00 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday during Somerset Art Weeks 2010.

This exhibition presents my visionary exploration of shapes and forms drawn from exotic places in this remarkable world. The dramatic location of Petra's sandstone facades, fantastic towering weathered sandstone of Wadi Rum, and Anatolia's moonscape eroded by the elements are captured in atmospheric pastel, pen & ink, and gouache paintings.

A painting by local artist Julie JenkinsIncluded are paintings of Hindu and Jain temples in India, and ancient Buddhist carvings of Yungang Grottoes, Datong, Shanxi Province, on the Silk Route.

Travel to remote, spiritual or exotic places has been a great source of my inspiration, drawn from ancient neglected sites or those protected by worldwide organisations such as UNESCO.

A painting by local artist Julie JenkinsPainting for me is a form of meditation which brings peace and harmony, and it is my intention to evoke different moods through my work, be it reflective or a sense of tranquillity.

Included in my exhibition are paintings of Hindu and Jain Temples in Rajasthan, India, which represent an earlier magical journey around India.

I work to an end, to re-awaken dreams of distant places that capture the imagination and perchance a reverie of halcyon days.
