Wincanton's 2016 Market Place Christmas tree

On Friday 2nd December many Wincanton High Street traders will be keeping their shops open till 7:30pm, so residents and visitors can enjoy some late night Christmas shopping. But that's not all that'll be going on in town that night. The Wincanton Chamber Christmas Elves have been hard at work to ensure as much Christmas cheer as possible on the run up to the big day.

The first part of their master plan was the Lantern Parade on Saturday 19th November, coinciding with the switching on of the Market Place Christmas tree lights. The Town Council excelled themselves providing what must be the biggest illuminated tree for many a year. Despite the awful weather the combined events made the evening a great success.

Chief Elf Sarah Gibson said, “The Lantern parade was brilliant, if wet, with 26 lanterns to be judged”. If you want to see the lanterns, have a look at the ‘Lantern Tree’ in the window at Sarah Gibson Optometrist, Market Place. It looks great. Well done all who entered, and to all who helped on the night.

Chamber Elf Jane Griffin liaised with the High Street traders to encourage them to stay open till 7:30pm this Friday.

You’ll be amazed at what you can buy in Wincanton! Support your local traders; come into town and see how much you can source locally for Christmas. There will be special offers on the night, lucky dips, and kid’s competitions. Look out for the maps to see who’s open and what’s on offer. There’s bound to be mince pies and mulled wine, too.”

Christmas 2015 saw the first Christmas light projections by local artist Zac Greening. The displays at various places in town drew many positive comments. The good news is that he is back. What does he have planned for this year? Make sure you are there to see the displays switched on during the evening.

Important Safety Note

Unlike the normal Christmas Extravaganza, it is important to remember that there will be no road closures in effect. So, as you wander around town please ensure you and your families keep to the pavements. Traffic will be driving through town in both directions as usual.

We hope that you will all come out to the High Street on Friday evening and see for yourself how our High Street traders can help you to have a great Christmas.
