Maasai Warriors Come to Wincanton Church
Wincanton Parish Church is thrilled to announce the appearance, in concert, of the much acclaimed Osiligi Maasai Warrior Troupe on Saturday 29th October at 7.30pm. Their visit is part of their eighth consecutive UK charitable tour. The purpose of the tours is to raise money for the extended families of the Troupe's performers, and other members of their community, which is a small settlement some twenty-five miles South West of Nairobi, Kenya.
The tours have brought about a huge revival of the community's fortunes. At the time of the first tour in 2002, all the families in the area were destitute and without hope. This brought about the name "Osiligi" being Swahili for "Hope". From total poverty, so much has grown, ie the building of corrugated houses instead of huts made from cow dung, the introduction of fresh clean water in three areas, the building of a community centre/church, solar lamps to do away with the dangers of kerosene, and finally and most notably the building of a new school to open in January.
The Troupe's performances are stunning, and leave every audience totally enthusiastic and enchanted, having enjoyed an unforgettable experience. The singing and movement, like the Maasai's way of life, are in perfect harmony, and their jumping, for which they are famous, is mind boggling! The performance is fully narrated and is suited to all ages whether five or ninety-five. It's a wonderful evening and not to be missed! Tickets are £8 for adults, £6 for OAPs and £4 for children and are available from The Parish Office Wincanton 01963 824503 and Information Office, Town Hall Wincanton.
