The Wilton DiptychThere are NADFAS (National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies) groups across the country open to all people who are interested in the Arts in the widest sense (painting, pottery, textiles, glass, wood, architecture, heraldry, stained glass, etc).

The June meeting of the Society is on Tuesday 22nd and will take place at 11.00am in Caryford Hall, Castle Cary, BA7 7JJ. The Hall is on Maggs Lane, just east of the A371.

The subject will be "The Wilton Diptych: a 600 year old Secret Revealed." Painted in the 14th century for an English king, in the flowing lines and delicate motifs of the International style, it hides a secret. Come and hear about this famous local treasure.

The lecturer is Rebecca Drew who studied History of Art at London, the Sorbonne and Perugia and who has been a lecturer at London's Wallace Collection and at the National Gallery since 1990.

The July meeting is on Tuesday 20th at 11.00am, and will take place at the Westex Suite, Bath and West Showground.

Van Gogh and the colour of feelingThe subject is "Van Gogh and the Colour of Feeling". Juliet Heselwood, who has published seven books and lectures on the History of Western Painting, also leads art and architecture tours in the south of France. She discusses the artist's use of colour and form to convey emotions rather than painting nature with stereoscopic reality. This lecture follows the immensely successful Van Gogh Exhibition this spring at the Royal Academy.

Lawrence of ArabiaThe Society resumes, after its summer break, on 19th October (location to be arranged at either Castle Cary or Bath and West), with "Lawrence of Arabia - troubled hero of troubled times". The author of "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom", he was a man deeply interested and involved in the Middle East. His last home was at Clouds Hill in Dorset. The lecturer, Dr. Neil Faulkner, is Director of the Great Arab Revolt Project, exploring the archaeological remains of Lawrence's campaigns in modern Jordan. Tea and coffee beforehand.

The society is looking for new members who will be very welcome. Why not come along and try a taster? Contact Celia Knight, 01963 350527 for further information.

This looks rather interesting. If free I may well visit this. I wish we'd looked at these sorts of artists (specifically van Gogh) more in school. He's also a very interesting character, with many mental diagnoses being put forward (many of which give a potential insight into his creativity): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_van_Gogh's_health
