Organ Given to Wincanton Parish Church

Thursday 1 January 1970, 01:00
By Julie Russell

The event started with a cooked meal for the twenty travellers at the back of the church before hearing some of the organ’s history.

It all began way back in 1969 when Graham Goddard decided to take up a hobby having finished his PhD research in underwater acoustics and his chosen project was the building of an electronic organ. Having no knowledge of such things, he consulted with his friends Leslie Bennett, Brian Gazey and Ken Macfadyen, an authority on the mathematics of musical scales.

Malcolm Charsley entered the scene in 1975 and assisted with the voicing of the organ and various artistic elements were made available to the organist, such as a question and answer or echo feature.

The project was finished after eight years and Graham then set about the task of learning to play the instrument - no mean feat!  He progressed so far, but in 2008 realised his commitments were such that he no longer had the time to devote to his ambition. Through a mutual friend, a member of St Peter & St Paul's Church was contacted about the organ being available to a good home. It was duly collected from Yelverton and installed in the Church. The pipe organ in the Church was by now playing up and in need of a considerable amount of money being spent on it, so the new arrival was most timely!

Rose Hoskins, the assistant Rural Dean accepted the organ on behalf of the Church and we are most grateful for the use of this unique instrument until we are able to raise funds for a modern one.
