Public are Warned of New Council Tax Scam

South Somerset District Council is warning residents to be vigilant following a report of a new council tax scam involving a man demanding cash from a woman at her home in Chard.

A man approached an elderly lady at her property. He told her that she was in arrears with her council tax and owed £4,000.

The man, who asked her to hand over the money in cash, was wearing some form of identification card which is thought to read 'TEX'. Fortunately the woman was suspicious and contacted Avon and Somerset Police.

Ian Potter, Revenues and Benefits Manager at South Somerset District Council said, "This lady was told she was in arrears when she was not. She was right to raise the alarm and anyone who is not sure should ring the council on 01935 462462 to check it is genuine.

"Even if you are in arrears, you would always be formally notified in writing and certainly no one would visit you in your home before you had received a court summons and other written correspondence."
