Rain Doesn’t Dampen Wincanton Street Market Spirits
Sunday 20th October – rain again! However, the Wincanton Street Market traders and visitors still came out in force.
Wind back to 9.00am. Gallant Wincanton Town Team members and volunteers, under the tireless and expert direction of Millie Burr, undaunted by the conditions, are getting to grips with the various designs of gazebo and ferrying water containers from Julian Shave's and Divine Wines to weigh them down as they wilfully turn into unruly balloons in the high wind. By 11.00am all was ready for the tide of visitors whilst the Town Team looked like drowned rats.
Due to issues over the road closure, the market ran from Julian Shave's, where he had a popular fruit and vegetable stall, past Totally Floored, which opened for a few hours, and into the Carrington Way Car Park. There were around 40 stalls which included a wide variety of 'street food', cheeses, olives, meat and cakes as well as jewellery, gifts, arts and crafts. Mouth-watering wafts of cooking set many a stomach a-rumbling.
This time we were serenaded by wonderful buskers and were also joined by stilt walker, Lizzie the Fire Eating Lizard. She will be back for the next market with her fire eating display as well!
For a while the weather improved and the sun shone, but then... a mighty deluge. Hardy customers hung on, partly, perhaps, because they didn't want to leave the shelter of the gazebos!
Although the overall turnover was probably a little down on the inaugural market and the car park wasn't the preferred venue, some visitors seemed to have appreciated the setting as it was more compact than the linear market up the High Street. It was disappointing that the High Street shopkeepers didn't do as well as last time. We are looking forward to obtaining permission to close the High Street every third Sunday on a regular basis in the New Year, so please be assured that the Town Team have the interests of the High Street shopkeepers at heart.
The next market will be on Sunday 17th November, once again in Carrington Way Car Park. At the time of writing it we are very excited to announce that we only have seven spaces left for stall holders and readers will be pleased to know that we have secured a bread producer for the market.
At the November market we will be asking visitors and stall holders to have their say on the market so it can feed into the Town Team planning next year. And if you fancy some invigorating exercise as part of a jovial crew on a Sunday, volunteers will always be welcome to put up the market and take it down again.
We hope to see you on Sunday 17th November 11.00am – 3.00pm in Carrington Way Car Park.
