Saying it with Flowers – Carers' 'Champions' Garden Centre Information Day
South Somerset Carers' Champions came together with Support Workers from Compass Carers, Carers' Assessment Workers from the Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and representatives from the Alzheimer's Society to hold a special Carers Information Day.
The event took place on Thursday 13th March at Otter Nurseries Garden Centre, Wincanton. Described as a 'one stop shop' for advice and information for carers, visitors to the garden centre had plenty of expert advice on hand.
There are some 58,000 carers in Somerset and over 6.4 million people across the UK now care for a relative or loved-one, saving national government an estimated £119 billion each year in social care costs.
Long-time Carers' Champion, Susan Hartnell-Beavis, said:
"Many people don't always recognise themselves as carers. This is usually because they are caring for a loved one and the role of caring for another person just creeps up on them over the years. They accept this and just get on with their day-to-day life.
"But there are all sorts of ways that carers can improve their lives and the lives of those they care for. Our Carers Information Day was able to offer as much essential information, advice and support as possible. By caring for carers we can help to prevent crises occurring and may even save the carers from becoming ill themselves. The information day was enjoyable and an excellent opportunity for carers to meet and share ideas and experiences."
