Talk in St Johns Church, Horsington: "Jerusalem & Palestine"
Sir Anthony Goodenough will give an illustrated talk about his recent visit to Jerusalem and Palestine at St John the Baptist Church, Horsington on Friday 24th May at 7.30pm.
He will show slides of sites sacred to Christianity, Judaism and Islam and of other places and people in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho and the Jordan Valley, Galilee and the Mediterranean city of Acre.
He will discuss the present relationship, and its origins, between Jews and Arabs, Israel and Palestine, and will conclude with an account of the work of the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group, a centre of excellence providing ophthalmic care of high quality and relevance to the people of the Holy Land irrespective of ethnicity, religion or ability to pay.
Sir Anthony has long taken a close interest in Palestine. From 2000 to 2003 he served as Secretary General of the Order of St John, the parent body of both St. John Ambulance and the Eye Hospital in Jerusalem. Prior to that, as a career member of the Diplomatic Service, he was British High Commissioner to Canada. He earlier served in Ghana, Pakistan, France and Greece. He first visited Jerusalem as a student in 1960 when it was under Jordanian rule.
A donation of £8.00 for this talk is suggested and will include refreshments. The proceeds will be shared between the Church of St. John the Baptist, Horsington and the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group.
