The Iron Lady - Wincanton Film Society's New Season Premier
Wincanton Film Society is pleased to announce the start of our 2012/13 film year. Our first offering for the new season, The Iron Lady, was a major success in the 2011 film year. Based around a period in the life of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, this was always going to be a film that caused divisions at all levels. That's par for the course in everyday politics. However, whether you were a Thatcher supporter, or whether you hated everything she stood for, this is a compelling film, not to be missed.
I'm one of those characters who wince when you have film stars portraying people from other countries. It sticks in my throat to see the great Sean Connery (the only real James Bond) playing a Spanish nobleman in "Highlander". It's a perfect casting. A Spanish nobleman speaking with a broad Scottish accent (just like mine).
That said I take my hat off to Meryl Streep, who gets everything right; even the Thatcher accent. This film serves to show that she is surely an actress above all actresses.
