"The Spirit of 1914 – the Regiments that Won the War"
The title of this year’s Nicholson lecture is “The Spirit of 1914 – the Regiments that won the War” and it takes place at Maperton Church on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd August 2014. Proceeds will jointly benefit Maperton Church and the Army Benevolent Fund, the soldiers’ charity.
This is a graphic story with images to depict the mood and activities in the crucial days leading up to the start of hostilities in August 1914 and the first grim months thereafter.
The Nicholson Lecture is Maperton’s opportunity to demonstrate, annually, that this tiny village can make a valuable contribution to the wider world – in particular, to the welfare of our armed forces. last year, we supported SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors & Airmen’s Families Association).
The Lecture is given in memory of Brigadier Claude Nicholson, who commanded the heroic defence of Calais in May 1940. Previous Lectures have proved both interesting and convivial: we are exceptionally privileged to have Dr. Patrick Mileham as this year’s speaker and we look forward to a good turnout for what promise to be two fascinating and very enjoyable evenings.
Tickets cost £15.00 and can be obtained from James Scott, Dykes Cottage, Maperton, Wincanton BA9 8EJ or via Maperton’s website, where you can also find more information about the Lecture.
