Wincanton Gardeners' Association receives Town Council Community Award for 2016
The Wincanton & District Gardeners' Association (WDGA) has been awarded the Wincanton Town Council Annual Community Award for 2016 in recognition of its exceptional service to the community.
For many years the association has planted flower containers within the town area, including Market Place and Carrington Way, providing beautiful colour from spring to autumn. The work involves obtaining plants and compost, planting, regular maintenance and watering throughout the season. It is undertaken by a group of volunteers led by Mrs Inge Nicholls. WDGA works closely with Otter Nurseries who have sponsored the planting of the flower containers on several occasions.
Since being founded in 1954, WDGA has hosted a variety of events including the annual Wincanton Flower Show. The 2017 event will be the Association's 62nd. A lot of work is required on the run up to these events, and on show day it's all hands on deck. The result has always been a great community event.
Throughout the year the association holds regular monthly committee meetings and hosts many events for its members. Talks on various themes are arranged, usually on the first Friday of each month. There is an annual lunch in January, a day outing to a place of interest, visits to gardens and garden centres, a rose and sweet pea show and more.
The Association is affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society. WDGA is also a member of the Castle Garden Gold Club which entitles it to a topical talk given by a speaker from Castle Gardens, as well as discounts on a variety of products in spring and autumn.
All these benefits are included in the annual membership fee, which is a mere £5.00. WDGA always welcomes new members. Anyone interested in joining, or wanting further information should contact Secretary Gill D'Arcy or Chairman Richard D'Arcy by calling 01963 33160, or emailing .
