Wincanton Bonfire Night returns this Saturday!
Guy Fawkes comes to Wincanton Sports Ground on Saturday 5th November, 6:00pm. It’s been many a year since the last organised town bonfire and fireworks display, but for 2016 it’s back. The youth teams who use the facilities at the Wincanton Sports Ground have organised a bonfire and fireworks event for the people of Wincanton.
Some will remember the annual gathering at Wincanton Racecourse for the bonfire and fireworks display. In fact this was my very first experience of an organised fireworks display where the fireworks were bigger and way better than anything we could afford. I remember the live radio broadcasts from the event. And then it was gone from the calendar.
Well, this Saturday Wincanton once again has a bonfire with fireworks, courtesy of the youth teams who have worked hard to organise the event. Even now, a walk down Common Road reveals the size of the bonfire, situated on the portion of land between the Wincanton Football pitch and Common Road. It’s a biggie, and with a good number of pallets for air circulation it should provide a spectacular fire on the night.
The fireworks are being supplied by the youth team members themselves, and will be set off during the evening by their parents. Donations of fireworks have already been received, but as the event is free to all the youth teams ask you to consider bringing a donation of fireworks with you. The more the merrier.
There will also be an opportunity to enter the ‘Guy’ competition. You are invited to create your own Guy and bring it to the event to be judged. Entry to the competition is £5 per Guy. There will be a prize for the best. You can also have your Guy placed on the bonfire before the lighting ceremony. Just make sure you tell the organisers when you bring it to the competition.
During the course of the evening there will be a BBQ, and after the fire and fireworks there will be refreshments in the pavilion for all.
The safety conscious will be pleased to know that the organisers of this event have contacted the police, ambulance service and fire brigade in the interests of the health and safety. They have made also tried to make contact with surrounding areas of residence where it'll be difficult to escape the effects of the event, including the Sports Ground's immediate neighbour, the Somerset & Dorset Animal Rescue Centre on Common Lane. All were The Animal Rescue Centre is happy for the event to proceed.
The event area will open to the public at 6:00pm. Entry is free to all. Guys will be judged before the lighting of the fire at 6:30pm. For more information call 01963 31815.
