Wincanton Skate Jam 2015 VIDEO

Wincanton’s skate park was put to good use earlier this month, playing host to what must surely be the first organised skate event in the Town’s history. Providing structured competition including prizes, young people participated with a wide range of equipment, including skateboards, scooters, rollerblades and BMX bikes.

At least one talented individual was sponsored to showcase during the event, but as you’ll see from the video not all the impressive performers were prearranged. Several participants possessed truly incredible acrobatic skill.

Young people travelled from as far as Sherborne and Yeovil to compete. Winners included Oliver Parker, Mitch Vanderwey, Dan Lacey, Alex Bell, Matt Pearce, Charlie Paul, Quinn Vanderwey, Travis Bowden, Ethan O’Grady and Will Parker. They took home a range of prizes, some donated by Krazy Scooters, Route One and Crucial BMX.

With the exception of good food supplied by the Brue Valley Rotary Club the event was completely free of charge to all participants. In addition to the skate competition activities included a climbing wall, sponsored by Wincanton Town Council, and music/DJ taster.

Somerset Rural Youth Project have been organising Youth Days across the county in cooperation with local councils and community groups. In this case they worked directly with the young people using the skate park who helped to organise the event, coordinating the competition, judging performances and providing entertaining commentary throughout.

We are delighted with the success of the day […] It was a pleasure to see the young people take pride and ownership of their park.

Supported by Wincanton Town Council and South Somerset District Council, Wincanton’s first Skate Jam followed shortly after the first of two Playdays based in Wincanton’s Cale Park (recreation ground) on 29th July.

The second Playday takes place tomorrow morning! Wednesday 19th August, between 10am and 1pm 1pm and 4pm there should be plenty on offer to entertain young people, provided the weather doesn’t put a stop to it.
