UM - Not about the post, or the council as such.

I was just a little sad to see the Tourist info shop shut mid afternoon on sat, at the start of half term...
what with half the shops closing. i see the flower shop has moved to castle-C.
Should we not be trying to entice some people into wincanton ???

Sadly most shops in Town close on Saturday afternoons. That has probably happened over quite a long time and locals have gotten used to that.
We were sorry to lose Julian and his team from the Market Garden. I suspect that the dynamics for his business were much healthier over there. In Cary they don’t have a Morison’s, a Lidl, or a busy Otter Garden centre within five minutes. Wincanton does.
There are actually quite a lot of initiatives being pieced together in the background to try and overcome the issues of attracting new business to Wincanton. The Town Team have worked very hard to produce a successful monthly Sunday Market that will start the 2014 season at Easter.
WBT is putting together plans for future business networking, and possible collaboration with some of our closer towns and villages. They are also part of an on-going marketing strategy team aiming to focus on the businesses we need/want to attract to Wincanton. This would cover both High Street and out of town estates.
It’s refreshing to see Animal asking those good piercing questions. I’m sorry I missed the comment or I would have been on sooner. Cool beard by the way. You must have a bit of Scottish heritage in you.

How nice to see a response to my questions. you have made a number of points here which I should like to take some time to digest. My initial response though is still of a little sorrow. I respect and agree we have those bigger shops - Lidl and Morrison's etc - in easy reach, even ASDA and Waitrose just down the road. in Gillingham. But that being said I feel that doesn't replace the wonderful feeling of a good shopping street.
Great to be able to do your shopping in a quick hour session, if lucky you can get through the self service check out. to save having to talk to anyone... if you ware a blind fold you dont have to see anyone either... Obviously I am going a little over the top but I think my point is valid. I love a nice busy hi-street, seeing people, experiencing different atmospheres in different shops, and actually having a little bit of a life, I work long hard hours and I feel I have no where to go on my time off - with respect does any of this make sense?

I have great love and respect for the wonderful businesses which have maintained there notch on the Wincanton belt, we have a great butcher, the cobbler/baggage shop, a great pare of charity shops and not to mention a well equipped post office. and, obviously we have our co-op.
we also have a good and well loved Library, the staff so helpful and welcoming.

Given a bit more finance and chance to develop Wincanten's appeal, given a fair chance at catching people who may wish to look up local things by maybe opening our Torist Info at key times ... When Torists may be looking for example. and by haveing a bit more pride in ourselves we may be able to bring some business and trade back to our little town,
and providing that money can be re-invested within Wincanton, we can continue to develop our niceties.
for example more parks, more facilities... perhaps we could even open the hi-street loo's (by co-op) rather than makeing people such as the elderly or pregnant walk that much further.

call me a bit of a sad old man, or a fussy bugger, but I feel that all this quality of life easily outweighs some peoples self imposed need to do there entire months shopping within 60 minuets.

as far as Me, I'm afraid I am not lucky enough to hold any scotch blood in my veins, I am not Irish or welsh either. I am a Flag waving - Patriotic - good old British man from right here in Somerset, My parents were English and Im proud to say I am too... Just as I would have been proud to be Scottish, Irish, welsh or Cornish.
for me though it doesn't matter where one is from, or there race creed or any other factor. all that matters is what a man does and says. the measure of a person is by there act's not by there background.

PEACE.
