Wincanton's Armistice Day parade 2018 VIDEO
On Sunday 11th November 2018 was the Wincanton Armistice Day parade and service. This year's event had a few unique characteristics, not least that it was a tribute to the Armistice Centenary.
The recent addition of military families to the local community has brought an even deeper sense of understanding of all that our military personnel and their families do and sacrifice for our benefit.
It’s not often that the Armistice event takes place on the actual anniversary date of the signing of the original Armistice agreement – the eleventh day of the eleventh month – instead usually taking place on the nearest Sunday.
There was also a change in the timing of the event. In past years the event was held mid-afternoon, but this year the event started at 10:20am, with a parade from the Memorial Hall to St. Peter and St. Pauls Church for the main service of Remembrance.
Those marching included members of the British Legion, the military, and representatives from numerous local organisations. As an unusual addition, a fly-past comprising three helicopters flew low over the town and on down the Blackmore Vale. Around 30 minutes later the helicopters returned, once again flying low over the town.
Despite the recent very wet weather, the sun shone bright on this year's parade, and was much appreciated by those marching and spectating alike.
