A Cracking Summer Community Concert Hosted by Wincanton Schools
Friday 21st June saw a packed out Memorial Hall full of parents and friends who had come to hear the Summer Community Concert presented by King Arthur's. Featuring all three of Wincanton's schools (the two primaries, Wincanton and Our Lady's, together with present and some former KA music students), and the Wincanton Junior Silver Band, we knew we were in for a full and varied programme.
During the first half, in addition to the KA Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, String Quartet and Folk Group, we had a solo by Rachel Baker and a Duet by Bridie Pirie and Emily Watson. Also in the first half the Wincanton Primary Band and Glee Club and Our Lady's Ukulele Ensemble performed with great enthusiasm and self-confidence showing how much can be achieved by skilled and dedicated teachers such as Mrs Sheila Kitts from Our Lady's and Mr Graeme Wilson, head of Wincanton Primary.
The second half celebrated the achievements of older and more experienced students, starting with a rousing performance by the Wincanton Junior Silver Band, who all attend rehearsals out of school hours in their own time.
Several, we heard, had worked hard enough to be admitted to the senior band. They were followed by the String Ensemble, giving a dazzling performance of a Vivaldi concerto and a beautiful piano solo by Katie Phillips. John and Lorna Blackmore sang a haunting folk song while accompanying themselves on guitar, violin, recorder and tambourine. The Soul Sisters then came on. This is a large group of girls who sing contemporary music such as New York with great sensitivity.
Connie Higgins' soulful solo with her multi-coloured guitar, mass of hair and pure voice made an unforgettable impression as did the Year 7 ensemble's rendition of El Condor Pasa and the electrifying performance in true rock style of Amanda Graffham and Charlie Miners. This got everyone in the mood for the Finale, Rockin' All Over the World which had everyone singing.
It was a great night backed up by parents and helpers and a team of KA students who quietly and efficiently moved microphones and music stands and got everything smoothly in place for Ms Emma Fletcher, KA's Music Subject Leader. Yet again it was her infectious enthusiasm, love of music and ability to inspire those she has taught that made the evening.
