Back in March, Wincanton Sports Ground was fortunate enough to receive funding from the Somerset FA to help set up football sessions for adults with disabilities. The funding allowed us to put on 10 free sessions, allowing local adults to keep active and improve their football skills.
As well as health benefits, the sessions also provide a fantastic social aspect, allowing participants to meet new people. Max Yarrow, a regular participant at the session and a member of Thorngrove Garden Centre, commented that "it is good exercise, and I have fun doing it."
Thorngrove manager, Caroline Bottomley, who brings over a group every week stated that the sessions "have been a fun way to get fit and learn to work as a team. All of our group enjoy going every week."
Although we have now used all of the funding, it has been decided that the sessions will still continue to run on our astro, and be led by a qualified coach. Sessions will run every Monday afternoon, from 2.00-3.00pm, at a small cost of £2.00 per session.
The sessions would not have been able to start without the kind support and help from the Somerset FA and especially Rachael Edwards, the disability officer at the Somerset FA. The Sports Ground would like to take the opportunity to thank them for the funding that has allowed us to give adults with disabilities the opportunity to take part in Sport.
In order to allow the sessions to continue and grow, it is vital that the event is promoted as much as possible so if you know of anyone who may be interested in attending the sessions, please do not hesitate to get in contact with me by either emailing or calling 01963 31815.
