An Introduction to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School
Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a voluntary aided Catholic Primary School situated on Tout Hill in the Centre of Wincanton. Currently the school has 120 children on its roll and approximately 40% come from Catholic families. The school welcomes children from all denominations and faiths or none. The school strives to give a balanced and caring Christian education.
The school has a number of children from the Polish and Portuguese community and now has a dedicated EAL (English as an Additional Language) teacher to work with the children and help them integrate into the classroom and access the curriculum.
Our Lady's School has four classes taught by five highly skilled and motivated teachers. Each class is supported by at least one (two in infants) classroom assistants and a number of extra helpers throughout the week. The school also has its' own specialist music teacher and special needs co-ordinator who liaise closely with each class teacher.
The Head Teacher, Mr Jerome McCormack has been at Our Lady's School since September 2008. Since then the school has also gone through an extensive period of modernisation and improvement to facilities. This has included two brand new high specification classrooms with interactive whiteboards and under floor heating. There is a brand new playground with pagoda, play equipment and "friendship" benches. Presently the school is having the roof replaced with other remedial building works already having been undertaken to improve the existing Georgian school building.
Our Lady's School is also proud of its' school meals provision, providing delicious hot meals cooked on the premises every day - many of these meals also go out to the elderly or house bound in and around Wincanton.
Our Lady's regularly holds fund raising events organised by the PTFA including an annual jumble sale, Christmas Bazaar, Summer Fete, Bingo, Beatle Drive, and Duck Race. The annual Duck Race takes place on the River Cale next to the recreation ground in mid May and is a popular fun event well attended by the local community.
