Barry Taylor Introduces Wincanton Sports Centre
Our Sports Centre is certainly flourishing. We have over 500 people signed up as Health and Fitness Members. This is the best value for money and because it provides you with unlimited use of our well equipped gym, the many organised fitness classes and the swimming pool so it works out that the more you use it the better. In addition there is free swimming for the over 6o's and reductions for those who come with a medical recommendation.
Of course the centre is very popular with children and we currently have over 700 following the Learn to Swim programme and hundreds of others come on their own or with their parents to use the centre on a pay and play basis. In addition all the local primary schools and King Arthur's as a Sports College are booked in daily to use our facilities during school hours.
We are an extremely busy Centre with a staff of over 50. Some are full-time, some part-time, but all are carefully trained to carry out their roles, so there are various specialist coaches, fitness instructors, swimming teachers and life-guards.
I really think that if you or your children have not used our swimming pool you are missing something. Recently refurbished we pride ourselves on keeping it spotlessly clean and hygienic. It has excellent changing facilities, warm showers for use before and after your dip, and when you take the plunge the water is kept at just the right temperature to ensure no-one ever gets chilly - and it has lots of room for the serious swimmer and learner alike, so come and try it.
Finally, remember we are a free standing not for profit charity, partially funded by the District Council and by the fees we charge. We are run by a board of volunteer directors, so if you would like to be involved with this, or know anyone with good commercial experience who could help in this role, please get in touch.
