A group of local people, who live in Charlton Musgrove and Gillingham, are working hard preparing for a charitable ploughing match to be held on Easter Sunday (5 April) between 10.00am – 2.00pm at Lower Zeals, near Mere.

The event, which is in its 12th year, is raising funds for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, The Fortuneswell Cancer Trust, Dorchester and Gillingham Boy Scouts.

The event is primarily for vintage and classic tractors, and ploughs. The tractors and ploughs date back as far as the 1930s, and one of the regular competitors was supplied by the ‘War Ag’ Committee specifically for war work and has been in the same family ever since.

The entrants can compete in several different classes which will be judged with perpetual prizes awarded. In 2014, for the first time, there was a class specifically designed for under 18 years of age ploughers, which proved popular. Also, there is the opportunity to just come along and plough, no need to be judged, just for fun.

As part of the entry fee participants will all receive a fabulous complimentary bacon and egg roll with the bacon being kindly donated by The Fine Food Company in Wincanton. Spectators will also have the opportunity to buy and enjoy one too, plus there will be a raffle with some exciting prizes to be won.

Chris Ricketts, Managing Director at The Fine Food Company explained why he was happy to support this event.

We are more than pleased to support local charitable events such as this one, as the more help they get the more money they can raise for these super charities.

John Bastable and Tony Adams, who are organising the event, said:

We are so grateful to The Fine Food Company for supporting our event as it makes such a difference to the amount of money we can raise. This is our 12th year of organising this event and in that time we have raised over £8500. We are aiming for much more than this in our second ten years. Please come along and support us; it’ll be a fun day out for all the family, and most importantly the more people who come along the more money we will raise.

The event is also being supported by other local businesses including Center Parcs who have donated a one day pass to Center Parcs at Longleat, as a raffle prize.

If you’d like to take part, please contact John Bastable on 07976 317180 for an entry form. Deadline for entries is Friday 27th March 2015.
