Children Lead by Example in Local Litter Pick-Up

Local children with litter-picking equipment, and several filled bags With the River Cale running dangerously high and fast on Sunday 13th January, the planned river clearance was postponed. Not to be thwarted completely, we decided to take eight children (including our own) on a litter pick of streets local to our houses.

In the streets nearby, we picked up six black bin bags of litter, so all was not lost.

Many people were ready to river clear today, including our Mayor! Gary and I went down to the river first thing to catch any helpers who hadn't got the postponement message, and met four of them.

A new date has been arranged for the river clean-up on Sunday 10th February. Same place, same time: Gillams Car Spares car park on Bennetts Field Industrial Estate at 9.30am. Hope to see you there!

Sorry I couldn't help on the day but glad to see younger members of my family were able to help. How did you motivate them to pick up litter, I can't even get them to keep their bedroom's tidy!!!!

This is more of a general note to any enthusiastic parents out there. I thought as do many, that it is the 'council's' job to pick up litter. Sadly, the whole country is in a pickle, and the money just doesn't seem to be there to support every cause we believe the council should do. To do the litter pick near where we lived was so easy to organise in conjunction with Sam Atherton at the town council, that anyone can do it. Ask her, she will help you....our kids had a wonderful time, learning and getting fresh air while doing something good for our town. It costs nothing to be a womble, apart from your time. Give it a go, and shout about it. Contact me if you want some advice in making it happen, it really is quite easy. The less litter there is lying around, the less people seem to chuck it around.
