KA Class of 2008 - Where Are They Now?

By James Phillips

The class of 2008 was, at the time, the most successful year group ever to leave King Arthurs. Thanks both to individual determination, dedicated teaching and strong leadership from the new Headteacher, the students achieved a 5 A*-C rate of more than 60%. Its been two years since they left, and this article provides an update on what some of them have been up to, what they have achieved and what they are planning for the future.

Steve Fuller (Strode - Art):

Steve Fuller, now pursuing a degree in photography

After King Arthur's I decided to pursue my academic life in a more mature environment and enrolled at Strode College to study English Literature, Photography, Mathematics and Geography. After dropping English Literature I achieved full A Levels in Photography (A*), Mathematics (A) and Geography (A*). After some very lively celebrations I decided to follow on to an Art Foundation in the hope that I can pursue a degree in Photography and hopefully become an artist in the future.

Hannah Freeman, off to study law in ReadingHannah Freeman (Reading - Law):

After KA I went to Strode College, taking A-levels in Psychology, History, Maths and Law. I met some great people and had some great trips to Italy as part of a GCSE course at Strode, and a trip to Paris with some good mates.

Now I am back to work, having decided not to take a gap year, and I am just heading off to Reading University for 3 years to take an LLB in Law.

Emily Bissett (Gap Year):

Emily Bissett, using a gap year to gain much needed work experienceAfter I left KA, I attended The Gryphon School in Sherborne to study for my A-Levels. I chose to study Maths, Psychology, Biology and Chemistry. I dropped Maths after AS, as this was my weakest subject and continued with the other 3 to A2 level. I really enjoyed my time at both schools.

I am now hoping to apply for University to study either Veterinary Medicine or Molecular and Cellular Biology. However I am taking a year out before University to gain much needed work experience and go to travel with a friend for 5 months. I have also followed up my love of running and have completed 3 half marathons (soon to be 4). I played netball as part of the Gryphon Sixth Form Team - although we weren't as successful as the KA team! I hope to complete my studies and then move to Australia to pursue a career in Veterinary, or research in Biology.

James Phillips (Oxford - Physiological sciences):

James Phillips (author), off to Oxford to study neuroscienceAfter KA I went to Bishop Wordsworth's Grammar School in Salisbury, where I studied the three Sciences and Maths. After much consideration, I applied to Oxford to study Physiological sciences (involving Neuroscience + Molecular Biology as the course is module based). This is a collection of several Oxford courses, involving areas of Medicine, Biology, Psychology and Biochemistry. I chose it due to its flexibility and diversity, and because it encompassed my main interest - neuroscience.

After what seemed like endless admissions tests and interviews, I received an offer to study there. I made some great friends at sixth form as well as staying in touch with friends from KA. Activities that I have been involved in include exhausting and rain (and hail) filled Duke of Edinburgh gold expeditions, visiting Downing Street and debating competitions, where I reached the grand final of the English Speaking Union competition.

Will Foers (UCL - Medicine):

Will Foers, off to University College London to study medicine. After leaving King Arthur's in 2008, I went on to the sixth form at Sexey's School, Bruton for my A Levels. I studied Biology, Chemistry, Maths and History, and am just about to begin studying Medicine at University College London. I enjoyed my time at King Arthur's; it seemed a really welcoming school and I learnt a lot there, and especially enjoyed the good sports provision. I believe my time at the school prepared me well for later life, both academically and in a wider sense.
