Children of King Arthur's holding an Ofsted banner, accompanied by David Heath MPSince the last Ofsted report in 2007, when King Arthur's was judged to be satisfactory, the bar has been raised. New school inspection arrangements have been introduced which mean that inspectors now make some additional judgements that were not made previously.

Following his visit, Lead Inspector Brian Evans wrote to the students thanking them for welcoming him and his three colleagues and said: "We enjoyed our visit and judged that King Arthur's is a good school. You make good progress in your learning and achieve well."

Tamra Bradbury, Head Teacher at King Arthur's Community School, WincantonHeadteacher Ms T Bradbury said: "I know that a lot of hard work went into raising standards at the school and I hope that staff, parents and pupils are encouraged by the praise from inspectors.  We now need to make sure that the hard work continues.

The quality of teaching is good because we have robust procedures in place to improve classroom practice. These are underpinned by good staff development programmes run during our inset days."

Ofsted inspectors were particularly impressed with the effective leadership and management at King Arthur's. "Through her presence around the school during lessons and at breaktimes, the headteacher personifies and models the determination of all the school's staff to do the best for each student", wrote Mr Evans.

Quotes from the Ofsted report:

  • The leadership and management of the Headteacher, her deputy and her senior leadership team are effectively sustaining high morale amongst both staff and students.
  • There is a rich and impressive range of courses on offer for older students which match their interests and needs.
  • There is a very strong curriculum focus on employability skills and this is raising achievement across all groups of students.
  • teachers are adept at using probing questions to check students' understanding and help them to ‘think wider'. This brings out the very best in the students and they make rapid progress.

"We are very pleased with the recent Ofsted inspection report, and I would encourage you to make up your own mind by reading the report yourself," said Ms Bradbury. A copy of the report can be found at www.kingarthurs.org.uk in the ‘News' section.
