Support Nigel MacCormack’s Ride for Children with Leukaemia
Few people are better known in Wincanton than Nigel MacCormack who works so efficiently behind the desk in our Post Office.
For years Nigel has been an enthusiastic sportsman, playing tennis and cycling. He has also used his cycling for longer than he can remember to raise money for the CLIC-Sargent charity which supports children and their families having to face leukaemia and other forms of cancer.
While our NHS provides the medical treatment, CLIC-Sargent provides support, grants and services and a series of homes and support centres. Here, children and their families can be put up comfortably near the hospital where they are receiving treatment and can be offered opportunities for respite and holidays as they recover.
Richard points out that when he started supporting the charity, only 30 per cent of the children struck down by cancer survived. Now it is 60 percent - making their outlook that much more hopeful. Behind this improvement lies not only in advances in medicine, but the supportive care that CLIC-Sargent has been able to provide - entirely as a result of charitable giving.
With this in mind Nigel and 26 other cyclists from around the country have set out to raise money for CLIC-Sargent by cycling 300 miles from Paris to London on Sunday 21st July after having watched the 100th Tour de France. Nigel is aiming to raise £3,000 from doing this. He told me that so far he has been overwhelmed by the generosity of people who have come into Wincanton Post Office and given him donations currently totalling £2,637.
That leaves quite a bit more to be raised, but of course if Nigel raises more than that it will help the ten new children and their families every day in the UK who have to bear the shocking news that they have cancer.
If you would like to know more about the work of CLIC-Sargent, see their website www.clicsargent.org.uk and if you would like to make a donation do so when you visit Wincanton Post Office or go to Virgin Money Giving.
