Quick and Easy Pedestrian Route Opens in Wincanton
Residents of Wincanton's new housing development are already making the most of the early opening of a footpath linking homes to the rest of the town.
The safe walkway, which runs from the New Barns Farm development to the west of the town, was opened by Abbey Manor Developments just ten days after South Somerset District Council suggested that it was brought forward.
Chairman of the District Council's Area East Committee, Cllr Mike Lewis, said, "Some of the residents who have moved in felt that the interim requirement to take a meandering, longer route into town was not helpful and we agreed. The developers were very quick to respond which is fantastic as we now have a useful, direct and safe path and the site is better connected even during the construction phase."
Nigel Timmis, Managing Director of Abbey Manor Developments added, "It became clear that, as the landowner, we could open the path as a permissive route and provide an easy solution which worked well for new residents."
In recognition of this year being The Royal British Legion's 90th anniversary, roads on the new estate are being named after local war veterans. The footway, Andrews Way, has been named after Corporal Raymond Speed Andrews. He was in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and lost his life in Holland on the 18th September 1944.
Local resident Mary Robinson, said "I'm delighted that the footpath had been opened. Before the path was opened it used to be frustrating because you had to walk twice as far to get anywhere which is no fun if you have weary children or heavy shopping"
