[UPDATE:] Progress has been made, and the Emporium is a little closer to becoming a reality...

The Purple Poppy is a family run business based in Wincanton. It has been selling predominantly wooden toys for the past nine months both online and at craft fairs.

In a move to support Wincanton's regeneration, The Purple Poppy's owner, Tracey Seager, is looking to open an emporium in Wincanton High Street to bring toy, gifts, antiques and curiosities together under one roof. The hope is to drive additional footfall to Wincanton town centre and facilitate local suppliers having a cost effective retail environment through which to sell and promote their products.

Still in the early stages of planning, Tracey is looking for traders who would be interested in taking a space in the emporium and is particularly interested in hearing from locals about the ranges of products they would like to see in the shop.

Please post your thoughts and ideas on The Purple Poppy's Facebook page, email , or leave comments under this article.

Great news, hopefully, in years to come when the regeneration is complete & folk from near & far are flocking to our Town Centre Tracey can sit proud knowing that she took those first brave steps.

May I be the first to wish you all the very best & hope that you call to others is fruitful.

This is a fab idea and will give a selling opportunity to small traders and local crafters who do not have the finances, time etc to embark on their own retail store. I for one am interested and I have written on your facebook wall!

Hi Victor. You might be interested in another article we published from Tracey in May; copy this link into your browser:

Tracey has also written on WW's Facebook page as recently as this Monday to describe her frustration at sorting out a lease on suitable premises. This is what she said:

"A little update on the Emporium's progress. Having shelved the old Allday's building due to a very challenging lease stopping play, we looked at Applegarth Arcade, the 3 units at the back. Unfortunately we offered the deposit and wanted to get cracking at the end of August but it took the landlord until last week to get the lease to us. We lost 3 weeks! The lease has a number of issues: no provision for a tea room, no ability to let bits of space (the whole point of the Emporium!) and full repairing obligations. The repairing clause means that if the building needs a new roof, we could be charged for it. Not reasonable on a 1 year let me thinks! However, a bit of too and fro with solicitors could have resolved these issues. The bigger problem is that we are running so late now and as a result had a number of unit holders bail out. Bottom line, we could open very quickly in Applegarth's biggest unit and work towards the other two at a later date. Having approached the landlord to make this adjustment he considers he has had his time wasted and will look elsewhere for tenants. We have sent 2 emails asking if he would let us use just the one unit but received no response as yet. We have however been talking to the owner of another shop which may or may not be big enough to do the job. We are hoping to see it imminently and if it suits we will be in like a flash .... as we will Applegarth if we are welcome!"

If you use Facebook it's always worth checking our page now and again - sometimes people prefer to write there, though it'd be great if everyone wrote articles for the website too!
