Still Cleaning Up The Town - Adam's Update for 2012

By Adam Bailey

Last year I spent some time cleaning up the town's assets. I made a start on Coneygore Lane, Cash's Park, Waterside Footpath and Shatterwell Shoots. In June I ran out of steam and had to retire to hospital for the repair of a "trigger finger" This took longer than anticipated to return to full working order. However I am now back online, operating at full pressure, and continuing on with the task.

Currently I am tidying up Shadwell Lane from Shatterwell Shoots to the bend adjacent to the Town Mill (Travis Perkins in new money). I have been working for several weeks on this task. It can only be done on a Sunday when the traffic is not so frequent. The task involves removing brambles and ivy which are extending well into the road.

It also involves removing litter which is ever present within the undergrowth. Litter so far (some of it removed by SSDC before I could report it) has included: a sofa, a bicycle, a mattress, traffic cones, shoes, bottles and mountains of paper. And of course the notorious TV!

At the moment this job is about half completed and should take another couple of months to finish.

When the task is complete, pedestrians, with or without a dog, will be able to jump on the grass and dodge the traffic. Cyclists and joggers will be able to pass along the road without having their eyes ripped out. At the same time anyone passing that way, will not have their view impeded by ivy, and will be able to see our lovely river.

This year I have also done a little more work on Shatterwell Shoots. The asset still needs the post finishing to match with the posts in front of the Post Office. Hopefully when the whole area from Shatterwell, along Shadwell Lane to the Town Mill is finished it can be included in our Town Trail. No-one should visit Wincanton without seeing Shatterwell Shoots. It is steeped in history and should not be missed out from our town's many attractions.

Now, am I being stupid or is that not the responsibility of Street Scene of SSDC?

I would just like to applaud Adam for voluntarily doing this work.

Thank you very much for doing something to smarten up the environment we live in.

How about a communal litter pick session before the Spring?

Being new here I found the Window online magazine. It looks great. Well done to those who produce it. It’s full of good articles and I would say a good asset for the town.

It's nice to see that a number of people seem to be brave enough to add comments. However it seems that as I look through the articles this chap Victor Meldrew seems to be one of those who can only give criticism. If nothing else he is true to his TV alter ego. But surely publishing such negative comments can only fuel negative reactions. I know that we have freedom of speech in this country, but surely with that freedom of speech comes responsibility for the way we use that speech? I hope that we will see a much nicer and more positive side to Victor in future comments.

I would love to give positive comments on here, but I have yet to find something I can do so to. Just in case anybody is wondering(which I doubt) I am Wincanton born and bred, and I do not like to see this Town being left to die because of complacency. You will note that most of my criticism is aimed at SSDC.
