Inspired by the success of Jade Jones winning Gold at the Olympic Games, members of Wincanton and Gillingham Tae Kwon Do Club headed to Paignton last Saturday to take part in the Southern Championships, bringing home eight medals in total.

Kirstin Darke won a gold and a silver in her first ever competition. Elliot Henshall won gold in his first competition as a Black belt, Assistant Instructor Sue Bailey won silver and Instructor Debbie Hill won two golds to add to her collection of former world champion titles.

Debbie said "I used to compete as part of the British team and won three World Championships; now I just compete for fun".

She said of her students' success, "I am proud of any student who enters and gives it a go, it takes a lot of guts. Those that brought home a medal should be very pleased with themselves."

The next goal for the students of Wincanton and Gillingham Tae Kwon do is the British Championships in Coventry in November, where up to 2,000 people from all over the country compete.

Tae Kwon Do literally means "the way of hand and foot" and is a Korean martial art and an Olympic sport. Anyone interested in improving fitness, learning self defence or starting their own journey in an Olympic sport should call Debbie Hill on 07767 668304. The club holds separate adult and children's classes.
