The View from Bayford Hill

The impaired view from a bench on Bayford Hill

Many years ago, the field immediately south of Bayford Hill and opposite the junction with Eastfield Road was zoned as an open space so that the stupendous view south over the Blackmore Vale could be enjoyed by local people in perpetuity.

Unfortunately, a few years ago planning permission was granted for its development. Most of the stone wall which formed its northern boundary with Bayford Hill was demolished and a security barrier erected. This is still there, but is now covered by brambles which look unsightly as well as obscuring the view.

There are many such eyesores scattered throughout the town. Congratulations to Sam Skirton, Town Clerk, and our Town Councillors for inviting the Chief Executive of South Somerset District Council to tour the most unsightly parts of Wincanton on Monday 12th August. Can we expect joint action by the Town and District Councils to get the owners of the offending sites to clean them up? If so, we would all be eternally grateful.

Check the planning application. 47 houses and open space etc. Watch the Town Hall notice board for a special planning meeting, and come and have your say
