Triathlon Comes to Wincanton
It may not be common knowledge, but the sport of Triathlon is one of Team GB's highest hopes of a Gold medal at this year's Olympic Games. We have World Champion men and women in many distances. Whilst the more televised events such as Ironman (which used to be in Sherborne) are of a longer distance and use open water venues, shorter pool based events make the sport more achievable in a wider range of locations.
Such an event will take place in Wincanton on 29th April 2012. Based at the superb Wincanton Sports Centre, run by Total Buzz Events (organisers of the highly successful Yeovil Half Marathon), the event will be a 400m pool swim, followed by a stunningly scenic bike route of 27km, with a challenging 5km multi-terrain run to finish.
The event has attracted lots of interest from experienced athletes in the area; however Race Director, Wincanton based Matt Allum, is really keen to attract novices to the sport. The format of the event has been designed with the novice in mind.
If the imminent Olympic Games have inspired you to take up a new challenge, maybe a local triathlon is for you. If you can't participate as an athlete, volunteers and spectators are also needed to make the event a huge success. If you need any advice, the team at Total Buzz Events include accomplished athletes, coaches, and bike technicians. The event will be supported by Wheels Cycles of Gillingham. They will be providing prizes to overall and age group winners. They are also able to offer advice, and have a large stock of bikes and accessories.
