Weedy Wincanton

Weeds overgrowing a public bench at the top of Bayford HillShould Wincanton be renamed Weedcanton, now that our town sports a rapidly expanding growth of weeds alongside our roads and in our walls and pavements? Somerset County Council is the Highway Authority so has a statutory responsibility to deal with the problem but only do so once a year. South Somerset District Council tries to help but has a statutory responsibility for paths and open spaces rather than roads and in any case does not have the resources to fill the gap.

Perhaps we should celebrate our weed killer-free status and claim that we are the greenest town in the South West, though we are unlikely to win any prizes in a Best Kept Town Competition. Perhaps we should start our own competition to find the most exotic weed growing in a public space in Wincanton.

I have raised the issue with the Town Council, but if you also find the appearance of the town an embarrassment, then try writing to our County Councillor Anna Groskop on to see if she can get some action from the Highways Dept.

With massive cuts in public expenditure in progress, we may all have to solve the problem ourselves.

Having only moved into Wincanton this year, we were surprised at the lack of Somerset Highways/SSDC care of the streets and lack of access points across roads in and around town ofr the disabled. As my wife is disabled and uses her Wheelchair to go shopping, dentist and to the chemists etc.she has to dodge not just the weeds hiding who knows what, but dog mess on the pavement and in the road, overhanging tree's and shrubs on the pavements, as well as trying to get up and down some pavements without proper access points for the poor sighted and wheelchair users. On the access point I have already spoken to Cllr Colin Winder who said he was on the case with the appropriate people. Do we not have a good old street cleaner or have the cuts taken this facility away from we Council Tax payers, we don’t get our grass verges cut (I have started to do the ones near me)or the street cleaned our way either. Must be all the cuts.
What does this say about the town?

This say more about SSDC and SCC that the Town. I believe that Thornwell Lane is the subject of petty differences over who does what, unfortunately nobody has the desire to do anything. By that I mean not only our elected Cllrs (one of which I think has tried) but any one on several "Managers" whose job (highly paid) and responsibility it is to ensure that things like this are cleared.
