Wincanton Sports Centre Celebrates its 10th Birthday!
On the 14th of May 2001 Wincanton Sports Centre opened its doors for the first time. To celebrate the last 10 years the Sports Centre held an Open Day on Saturday 14th May 2011 to showcase the activities on offer.
As well as a demonstration from resident club Wincanton Tae Kwon Do and participant activities such as archery, trampolining, badminton and the increasingly popular Zumba there was the opportunity for tours of the Centre's plant rooms and free fitness suite inductions. Youngsters sped through the pool using the sea scooters and ‘walked on water' using the Waterwalkerz.
A fantastic Sports Centre replica birthday cake was made by Nadine Seton from the Creative Cake Company and served with refreshing drinks to current and ex staff and trustees, visitors and customers. A presentation to the first ten members to join ten years ago and who are still actively using the Centre was made by the General Manager Lisa Vyner. Five current staff employed from when the Centre first opened were each presented with a bottle of wine.
Speeches were made by Alison Cameron, South Somerset District Council's Leisure Policy Co-ordinator and Councillor Tim Carroll who were both strategically involved in working with the charitable company that was set up to run the Centre 12 years ago and were fundamental in securing the Lottery award. Steve Joel, South Somerset District Council's Assistant Director for Health and Wellbeing sits on the current Board of Trustees as their representative and commented that over the last ten years over 2.2 million visitors have used the Centre which is an amazing number for the rural community in which it sits.
