100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme Memorial Ceremony
On Friday 1st July 2016 it will be 100 years ago that the Battle of the Somme started. It has been marked as one of the most awful days the British Army ever suffered. On the first day of the battle alone nearly 20,000 British soldiers were killed and a further 37,000 missing, wounded or taken prisoner.
Wincanton Royal British Legion will observe this tragic anniversary with a poignant ceremony around the War Memorial in the grounds of the Memorial Hall. The service will be led by The Revd. Peter Dixon and Last Post will be sounded by a bugler. Assembly is at 10.45am.
In common with the Nation a whistle will sound three blasts to denote “Over the Top” and the names of the six soldiers from Wincanton killed at the Somme will be read and wreaths laid. All are welcome to join us.
