Free Green Skills Hedgelaying Course at Carymoor
Thurs 10th December: Hedgelaying
Time: 10.00am – 4.00pm
This course is an introduction to the traditional hedgerow management skill of hedgelaying: Learn this rural skill which maintains livestock-proof hedges and creates a fantastic habitat for wildlife.
Hedges are an important part of our countryside, yet they are functional too. The use of hedges goes back hundreds of years (perhaps more) and is an effective way to keep in livestock and mark boundaries. They also have very important benefits for wildlife as they are home to many nesting birds, small mammals and many insects. Once hedges reach over four metres in height they start to encroach upon fields and become “gappy” at the base. It is at this point that they need to be laid.
The course will cover:
- the history of hedgerow management in the UK
- the theory of hedgelaying
- practical tasks to learn safe hedge-laying techniques using the Devon style.
By the end of the course you will know about the theory and history of hedgelaying and will know how to lay a hedge. No previous experience is required and this course is suitable for beginners.
For both courses you need to bring a packed lunch and wear suitable outdoor clothes (old clothes, waterproofs, boots or wellies).
Booking is essential. Please email or phone 01963 351350 to find out more and to book your place.
