Remembrance Day, Wincanton - 2013 UPDATED
10th November, and the sun shone for Remembrance Sunday which yet again was moving and impressive. Members of the Royal British Legion were on parade with members of the Fire Service in their navy blue uniforms and the Youth Organisations, Air Cadets, Scouts, Guides and Brownies all smartly kitted out. A considerable number of people congregated on Wincanton High Street to see them all march past led by the Wincanton Silver Band.
Our MP David Heath, County Councillor Anna Groskop and District Councillor Colin Winder, together with our Mayor Deryck Lemon and other town councillors were also there and the parish church had every seat filled for the service lead by the Revd Nigel Fever.
The high point of the service was the laying of poppy wreaths by all the organisations surrounded by their banners as stirring band music was played and the Last Post sounded.
The pity and waste of war, of young lives cut short and families left shattered was brought to mind as we remembered the courage and commitment of those who have accepted risking or losing their lives to defend their country in conflicts from the Somme to Afghanistan today.
After the service there was a march past. David Heath looked on as Lt Commander Neil Loughrey, representing RNAS Yeovilton, and Lt Col. Colin Thomas of the Royal Logistics Corpse, took the salute. Colonel Thomas now lives here, together with some four other servicemen present, a trend we can expect will expand as new MOD homes are sited here.
