Stourhead - Autumn Sun and Evening Mists

Friday 21 December 2012, 22:11
By John Baxter

Stourhead never ceases to inspire. This year the rain poured, soaking the earth and bringing much flooding to Somerset, so when we had a beautiful day of sun we set off for Stourhead for a walk around the lake, only to find we were not alone. The largest visitor invasion I have ever seen in forty years was cramming the car parks and crowding the pathways as people escaped being indoors to experience what was left of Autumn's splendour. The next day down came the rain again until last week when the rain held off for a clear but very different day. We arrived as the shadows lengthened in the early evening and the main temple by the lake was wrapped in a gentle mist. This time the atmosphere was mythic and mysterious and we were almost alone.

It is a great mistake to think you can only get the best shots when the sun is out and your flash is on. Modern digital cameras handle low light well and all types of weather and light give us photo opportunities. Have a go and send in your shots to our new monthly exhibition.
