The Sowing of Cale Park’s Memorial Meadow VIDEO

Though still in its infancy Wincanton’s Cale Park project is very much under-way. Over the last year several steps have been taken, predominantly volunteer-driven, including the planting of hundreds of bushes and saplings in key areas according to the project plan.

An empty plot of land at the foot of the existing play area, adjacent to the river, once contained bicycle humps; mounds of earth with a bike trail, similar to the skate park. Long since flattened, the land was recently rotovated, and sprayed to remove unwanted grasses and weeds in preparation for a new wild flower meadow.

On Saturday 25th April volunteers, including members of C.A.T.C.H. working with the Recreation Ground Working Group as well as other members of the public, worked tirelessly for 7 hours to complete the final preparation of the soil and to sow the meadow seeds, both entirely by hand. Quite an achievement given the size of the plot.

The Wincanton Branch of the Royal British Legion have been fully supportive of this work. It was suggested that the meadow be named Memorial Meadow, commemorating those who gave their lives in the World Wars. Among the seeds of more than 20 varieties of wild flower and meadow grasses were several thousand Flanders poppy seeds.

It should be quite a sight in full bloom, and it is hoped that a mowed path and perhaps a bench or two will enable everyone to enjoy the meadow.
