Wincanton Armed Forces Day – Saturday 27th June 2015
Armed Forces Day events will take place in Wincanton on Saturday 27th June. The aim of the day is to honour the contribution of military personnel, past and present, showing support to, and thanking the men and women who serve.
Funding Available for Community Groups in the Wincanton Area
Funding is available for projects that support vulnerable, isolated and lonely older people and their carers; to improve life opportunities for disadvantaged children, young people and their families and to support communities affected by rural disadvantage. The deadline for applications is 15th June.
A History Society Talk About The Amazing SS Great Britain
Specialist lecturer Ian Caskie will be travelling from Bristol to give what will be a fascinating lecture on this amazing ship on Friday 29th May in the Wincanton Memorial Hall at 7.30pm.

The Revd. Canon Alan Watson and his wife Rosemary welcomed John Baxter and I when we turned up at their home to hand over a framed document giving them Life Membership of the Wincanton Museum and History Society.
Free Skills Workshops for Anyone Working 16 Hours or Less
The Balsam Centre is running a Jewellery Workshop and an Ebay workshop as part of their new Skills Workshops, aimed at people who are not working or working 16 hours or less.
Key Milestone for New Wincanton Children’s Nursery
Offices at Churchfields, Wincanton have had change of use permission granted by South Somerset District Council to transform them into a children’s nursery. Forty much needed spaces for 0 – 4 year-olds will be created.
The Shedders – Working in the Community
Wincanton’s Shedders were in the press recently because of their work supplying owl boxes to the Hawke and Owl Trust. Now they are bringing the benefits of their gifts to bear closer to home.

At a packed meeting of the Museum and History Society George Keen gave a fascinating talk on how he and his family have been making Cheddar Cheese on their farm outside Wincanton, which has achieved international fame for its taste and quality.

Wincanton’s Masonic Lodge is Looking to Help Local Causes
Wincanton’s Masonic Lodge has been left an endowment that has been set aside to provide grant funding for local causes. Applications are invited from local charities and not-for-profit organisations for a slice of this endowment.
Good Samaritans
The Kiddle family of Wincanton are getting a reputation for being Good Samaritans. In April 2014 Gordon rescued an elderly canine resident. Now his wife Margaret has come to the rescue of an elderly human neighbour in need of help.
Museum Gets a Logo Thanks to King Arthur’s Artists

Poppy Appeal 2014 – British Legion is “Overwhelmed” by Local Generosity
This year’s Poppy Appeal is now virtually finished. Nearly all of the donations have been counted and banked. The total amount of donations stands at £15,635, for which the British Legion would like to thank everyone.
Remembrance Parade 2014 – Wincanton Pays Tribute VIDEO
Remembrancetide this year was very poignant and very well attended, this being the Centenary of the Great War. During the period many wreaths and crosses were laid at graves and memorials throughout our area.
